Howard was the son of Aaron Cripe and Lettie Copenhaver. He married Gladys Marie Chupp (daughter of Jacob S. Chupp and Wanda Irene Toliver) on 02 Jun 1944 in Elkhart, Indiana. They had three children:

Howard loved all kinds of sports. His funeral was handled by the Yoder-Culp Funeral Home in Goshen, Indiana. His wife remarried to Marion Treet, but kept her last name of Cripe. Marion preceded her in death also. She survives in Goshen, Indiana.
