Donville ("Don") was the second of two children born to James Donville Fairchild and Mary Ann Spurway. He was a talented musician and left the University of Nebraska in 1920 to go to London with "Nebraska's Jazz Band", the "Rag-A-Jazz Band", in which he played banjo. He married Katherine Louise Smith in 1925 and went to work as an actuary and underwriter for the Woodmen of the World Insurance Company in Omaha, NE. He later moved to Chicago. He and Kathryn had two children.
