George was a harness maker by trade and supported his growing family in Sharonville for at least 15 years. He enlisted in the Union Army in 1861 and served until 1864. He was in the battles of Paint Creek, KY, Ivy Mountain, WV and Shilo, TN. He was a captain at the time he was discharged and later drew a disability pension for his injuries.
