HERMAN AUGUST FREDERICH MALONE: was born the 10th child of 11 children to Louise Streich Malone & John Malone on 22 Oct 1891 at Fairbury NE. He departed this life late Saturday evening 6 Aug 1988 at the Colonial Villa Good Samaritan Center at Alma NE. He was 96 years-9 months-14 days. Herman was baptized at the Zion Evangelical Church at Fairbury on 10 Jan 1892. He moved with his parents to the Mascot & Orleans communities in Harlan County where he attended Rural School District-18. On 23 Mar 1914, Herman was united in marriage to May Hodge at Holdrege NE. To this union 7 children were born: 5 sons-Leo, James, John, Melvin & Lee & 2 daus-Ilene & Pauline. The family resided in the Orleans & Mascot communities until 1945 when they moved into Orleans where he was Chief of Police for 9 years.
On 15 Sep 1949, Herman was again united in marriage to Gladys Wintersteen Farrington. In 1958 he moved to Alma where he had resided the rest of his life. After moving to Alma, Herman went to work for the Perch & Dutton Pipeline as a constructiion foreman in the construction of city sanitary pipeline. He was employed with Perch & Dutton for 9 years, retiriing in 1967. He had been a resident of the Colonial Villa Good Samaritan Center since 27 Sep 1984. Herman was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife May; his second wife Gladys; 3 sons: John-in childhood; Melvin & Lee; a step-son Ross Farrington; 8 brothers-John, Gus, Louis, William, Charles, Otto, Theodore & Ferdinand-in infancy & 2 sisters-Mrs Augusta Schliem & Mrs Louise Coe.
He leaves to mourn his passing 2 sons: Leo Malone (sp-Sue)-Denver CO; James Malone (sp-Janice)-Alma; 2 daus: Ilene (sp-Henry) Uhden-Trent SD; Pauline (sp-Leonard) Hupf-Grand Island NE; 2 daus-in-law: MrsBernice Malone-Hastings; MrsMildred Malone-Holdrege; 16 grandchildren; 2 step-grandchildren; 27 gr-grandchildren; 7 step-gr-grandchildren; 4 gr-gr-grandchildren; 7 step-gr-gr-grandchildren & other relatives & many friends.
Memorial services were held Tuesday morning Aug 9th at Banta-Torrey Funeral Chapel with Pastor Baron Cole officiating. Music was provided by Kenneth Bushnell, soloist, & MrsJoyce Wunibald, organist. Pallbearers were his grandsons: Wayne Backencamp, Ken Vlaypool, James Gaskill, Lonnie Malone, Lawrence McGowan & Roger Sweley. Honorary bearers were also grandsons: Thomas Hupf, Jerry Malone, Monte Malone, Charles Meyer, Curtis Olson & Henry Uhden Jr. Interment was in Orlean Cemetery. Banta-Torrey Funeral Home of Alma had charge of arrangements.
