Mr. Batten was married to Patricia May (Beck) Batten Soucie and they later divorced. On October 7, 1972, at the Central Christian Church in Lebanon, Indiana, he married Iva Doris (Johnson) Bailey Batten. Doris and Bob were married for 37 years, before she passed away on March 30, 2006.
During World War II, Bob enlisted in the United States Army Corps and was an airplane mechanic. He was reared and educated in the Alamo and Ladoga communities before he moved to Boone County where he resided in Mechanicsburg. As a young man, Bob had worked for Doris' father on the Johnson family farm and received room and board as payment. He later worked for Peabody Brothers and then Larr Equipment (International Harvester) for 37 years as a mechanic before retiring in 1978. Bob also helped many of the local farmers on the side. In his retirement, he mowed grass at Shumate Business Solutions.
He had many hobbies including playing cards, fishing and hunting, and spending time in the out-of-doors. Bob's fondest memories usually revolved around his family and friends and the wonderful times they had together.
