L.J. Hicks Dead
There was genuine regret and sorrowing in town Tuesday when it was learned L. J. Hicks had died at his home in Weir City, Kansas. Mr. Hicks is known by all the residents in town with the exception of those who came here in the last two years and without exception he was honored and loved by them. The high place that Mr. Hicks occupied in the thought of the community was not due to great land holdings or things of that kind but on account of his high moral character. An old friend of his in speaking of him said that if we had an entire community made of men of the type of Mr. Hicks this would be an ideal place to live.
Lemuel Judson Hicks was born in Canadalia [Canandaigua], New York, March 22, 1847. He was united in marriage in 1866 to Miss Katherine Willsey. If Mr. Hicks had lived until next March he and Mrs. Hicks would have celebrated their Golden Anniversary. Thirty-seven years ago they moved to Missouri and settled in Jackson County. Later they came to Bates County where they lived up to two years ago when they moved to Weir City, Kansas. His loving wife and four children, sixteen grandchildren, and one great grandchild survived the deceased. The children are James Hicks, of Monett, Mo., Mrs. H. F Gude, of Weir City, Kansas, Mrs. A. H. Fann, of Kansas City, Mo., and T. W. Hicks, of Rich Hill. All of the children were here to attend the funeral of their father.
The funeral services were held at the Baptist church conducted by Rev. F. H. Grace, of the Presbyterian church. The services were very impressive. Miss Christie Weik sweetly sang, "Face to Face" and a mixed quartet composed of Misses Elizabeth Griffin and Christie Weik and Messrs. L. C. Stoweraker and H. E. Sheppard sang. The pall bearers were J. W. Jamison, W. B. Williams, J. T. Englean, L. M. Griffith, C. W. Orris and Lafe Grimm. Burial was made in the Green Lawn Cemetery where the W. O. W. Lodge had charge of the services. The deceased was a member of this lodge and also a member of the United Brethern Church.
The following from out of town were here to attend the funeral, E. E. Hills, of Independence, Mo., Mrs. J. H. Moopy of Hartford, Ark., Mr. and Mrs. Marion Wilson, of Webb City, Mo., Mrs. Will Hutchins and Chas. Wilson, of Greenwood, Mo. All of the grandchildren with the exception of three were here also.
