Plentywood, Montana - Martha Linea (Engstrom) Walling died from natural causes March 4, 2012 at the Sheridan Memorial Nursing Home in Plentywood, Mont.
She was born at home Sept. 5, 1914 outside of Hallock, Kittson County, Minn.
She was one of seven children born to Carl and Anna (Bengstron) Nelson, both from Smaland, Sweden.
Martha grew up and attended school in Hallock, then later went to State Teachers College in Moorhead, Minnesota.
She married Paul Ivan Engstrom, who was born July 29, 1904 in Lancaster, Minn. to Paul and Ann (Vang) Olson, from Sweden and Norway. Paul and Martha later moved to Plentywood, Mont., where they raised three sons, Ronald, Robert and Larry. The family operated a farm they named Parmel, located South of Reserve until Paul died in 1969.
Martha later met Leslie Herbert Walling, who was born March 28, 1908 in Salt Lake City, Utah. They married in 1973 and lived their life in a pretty little pink house in Williston, No. Dak.
They preferred to stay close to home, but did some traveling around Montana and North Dakota to check on Les's honey bees. They both loved being in the back yard. Les tending to his vegetable garden and Martha pampering her wide array of flowers. They both had a great love of music. Les would sing while Martha played the organ, and they would dance throughout the house and at least one of them was always humming! She also loved to paint, leaving behind many beautifully detailed canvases. Martha was also a master in the kitchen. She was well known for amazing holiday dinners and could bake better than anyone. No one will ever forget her amazing caramel and cinnamon rolls. Martha was such a fun, warm-hearted and supportive woman…her grandkids, nieces and nephews all loved to visit.
She and Les had the coziest house to stay at, the best stories to tell and the neatest things to play with. And everyone heard Les call out, "MARTA!" if he needed something…and she was always there.
Les passed away in 1998 and not long after that, Martha moved back to Plentywood to be closer to family.
She is survived by her sons, Ronnie and Sharon (Brenteson) and their children, David (Cathy) Engstrom and MarShele (Bryce) Hancock; Robert and his children, Katrina, Ann Marie and Susan; Larry and his children, Travis, James and Ashley; by two step-sons, Leslie A. Walling and G. Laddie Walling; and many great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins including those in Minnesota and Sweden.
She was preceded in death by her parents, both her husbands, by two brothers and five sisters: Roy who died in infancy, Leonard Nelson, Nancy (Elmer) Johnson, Olga (Leo) Mumey, Lillian (Archie) Johnson, Ethelyn (Arvid) Engstrom and Marian (Vernon) Smolak, by her great-grandson Christopher Olson.
In keeping with Martha's wishes, cremation will take place and a memorial will be held April 10 at Fulkerson Funeral Home, Plentywood, Mont.
