William H. Albers entered the grocery business by working as a clerk at his father's market, and later became associated with the Kroger Grocery and Baking Company. In 1928, Albers became President of the Kroger chain and quickly began expanding the company. Differences between Albers and the company's Board of Directors lead to his resignation in 1930 and the founding of his own grocery company in 1933. Albers' stores were the first to use the term "supermarket", and they featured many innovations which were eagerly accepted by customers. His business success enabled him to serve the community in many ways. Albers Hall on the campus of Xavier University is a gift from Mr. Albers. He served on the National Executive Board of the Boy Scouts of America and many other civic organizations as well. He and his family lived on a large estate east of Cincinnati named Alberly Manor. Following William H. Albers death in 1954, Albers Super Markets, Inc. was purchased by Atlanta-based Colonial Stores. At the time of the sale there were 66 Albers stores operating in Ohio and Kentucky.
