Obituary: Richard B. Pabst , 73, retired highway designer. A vigil service for Richard B. Pabst, 73, who died Thursday at his Lewiston home, will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday at Vassar-Rawls Funeral Home in Lewiston. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Lewiston. The Rev. Sean Caulfield of St. Stan's will be the celebrant. Burial will follow at Normal Hill Cemetery in Lewiston. Pabst, a retired highway designer for the Idaho State Highway Department, died from complications of liver disease. He was born May 5, 1925, to Herman F. and Mary Tiede Pabst at Gifford. He attended Gifford schools and graduated from Gifford High School in 1943. He married Gladys A. Nathe April 18, 1958, at Boise. He served as a coxswain in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Tulagi in the South Pacific during World War II. He then attended the University of Idaho at Moscow and did farm work during the summer. He did farm work in the Gifford area until May 1951, when he went to work for Stellyes Seed Service. In 1957 he began working as a highway designer for the Idaho State Highway Department. From 1960 to 1968 he lived at Pocatello, working as a highway designer. He moved to Lewiston in 1968 and designed more than 100 miles of Idaho state highways, including the new Lewiston Grade and the new White Bird Grade. He retired in 1988 but continued to work part time for the Idaho State Department of Transportation until December 1997. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling and visiting with family and friends.

He is survived by his wife at the family home; a daughter, Brenda Pabst of Lewiston; a stepson, Craig Lang of Boise; two sisters, Bertha Windham of Clarkston and Verla Hall of Alto, N.M.; a brother, Norman Pabst of Midvale, Utah; and two grandsons.
