Funeral services for Shelton Joseph Braud will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, March 15, 2012 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marksville with Father Rusty Rabalais officiating. Entombment will be in St. Joseph Mausoleum #2 in Marksville. Arrangements are under the direction of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home of Marksville. Mr. Braud, age 92, of Marksville, passed away at Avoyelles Hospital in Marksville on Monday, March 12, 2012. He is preceded in death by his parents, Emile Pierre Braud and Hazel Eve "Coeur" Braud; sisters, Alvern (Walter) Carbo, Robbie (William) Kornrumpf and Lois (Leonard) Herbez.

Shelton graduated from Dutchtown High School in 1937 and from LSU in 1942. He joined the U. S. Army and served with the Polar Bear Regiment (85th Inf. Div., 339th Inf. Reg) as an Anti-Tank Unit Commander earning the Bronze Star among other commendations, fighting from Southern Italy to the Brenner Pass in Austria. He remained in the U. S. Army Reserves, retiring in 1964 at the rank of Major. After WWII and his marriage to Marian, he entered employment with the LSU Agricultural Extension Service working in Pointe Coupee, St. Landry and Avoyelles Parishes. He received a Masters Degree in Extension Education from LSU and also received the National Asssociation of County Agents Distinguished Service Award in 1975. He retired from the Extension Service in 1982 after 32 years of service.

Among his numerous civic awards and activities, he was a 4th Degree Knight in the Msgr. Van Der Putten Assemby of The Knights of Columbus, Marksville Lions Club Past President, American Legion Prevot-Johnson Post No. 130, Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), Marksville Chamber of Commerce, La Commission des Avoyelles, Arts & Humanities Council of Avoyelles, and LSU Alumni Federation.


Mr. Braud was born and raised in Cornerview, LA. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Marian Bordelon Braud, four sons, Stephen C. (Mary Ann Despaux) of Belle Chasse, LA, Stuart P. of New Roads, LA , Kenneth W. (Jamsie Roberts) of Oklahoma City, OK, and Richard K. (Georgieanna Aguilar) of Schertz, TX, and one daughter, Judith E. Byers (Ricky) of Lafayette, LA; ten grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by two brothers, Neelis (Bernice of Fort Payne, AL, Leon of Baton Rouge; and sister Zilphia Fontenot of Central, LA.


Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 14, 2012 from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. and will resume on Thursday, March 15, 2012 from 9:00 a.m. until shortly before time of service. A rosary will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 14, 2012 in the chapel of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home.
