1920 census and gravestone said "Unice" but she was Eunice in many sources, including her 1864-67 paperwork as she sought a Civil War widow's pension. Sources vary--she was born in Indiana or Illinois.
All 15 papers in the pension folder confirm that her late husband was Joab A. Patterson, who served in Company D of 13th Illinois Cavalry. Joab died of illness 13 April 1864 at Camp Butler, Sangamon Co., IL. Eunice was granted a widow's pension 5 July 1867 and it continued until she remarried in June 1883. She received $8/month plus $2/month for each of her and Joab's 3 children until they turned age 16 (1876-80).
Eunice (while remaining widow Patterson) had 4 more children born 1869-79.
