Wood Village resident Orvis L. Kearney died Sunday, March 11. He was 90.
A graveside service with military honors will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, March 19, at Willamette National Cemetery, 11800 S.E. Mount Scott Blvd., Portland.
Orvis was born March 28, 1921, in Twin Falls, Idaho, to John and Rose (Phillips) Kearney. He was raised in Barstow, Wash., and graduated from Marcus High School in Marcus, Wash. Orvis enlisted in the Army on July 21, 1944, and served in World War II. He received the Meritorious Unit Commendation, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the Bronze Arrowhead, the Philippine Liberation Medal with two bronze service stars and a Victory Medal. He was discharged Feb. 22, 1947.
On April 7, 1947, he married Myra Saxton in Kettle Falls, Wash.
Orvis worked for John Deere Corp. for 35 years. He transferred from Spokane, Wash., to Wood Village in 1964. In 2007, he and his wife turned their Barstow vacation home into a retirement home.
Orvis was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Grange Hall. He enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing, Lawrence Welk and Bing Crosby, and spinning a good yarn. His wife said he would "never ruin a good story with the truth."
He was preceded in death by his wife in November 2011; his brothers, John Kearney and Amiel Kearney; and sister, Roseanne Kearney.
Survivors include his sons, Elton Kearney of Kettle Falls and Wayne Kearney of Oregon City; daughter, Denise Boston of Wood Village; brother, Joseph Kearney of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; and 12 grandchildren.
Cornerstone Funeral Services & Cremation is handling arrangements.
