Elvira was the daughter of Jacob Achorn of Thomaston, Knox County, Maine and Mary Brown Achorn of Camden, Knox County, Maine. Mary and Jacob had six children. They were: William B. Achorn was born on 24 October 1819 in Rockport, Knox County, Maine; Margaret Achorn was born on 12 November 1822 in Rockport, Knox County, Maine; Sarah Brown Achorn was born on 19 April 1825 in Rockport, Knox County, Maine; Josiah Achorn was born on 25 April 1828 in Rockport, Knox County, Maine; Mary F. Achorn was born on 29 December 1833 in West Rockport, Knox County, Maine; and Elvira Achorn was born on 14 September 1836 in West Rockport, Knox County, Maine.

Elvira married Henry Orlando Hewitt on 24 October 1857 in Rockport, Knox County, Maine.

note: Elvira was previously interred in Packard cemetery at Owl's Head, Knox County, Maine but her niece who was her husband's second wife raised such a fuss that her daughter's second husband, Merritt Whitney, removed her and her baby's remains to his family's area in Rockville Cemetery in Rockville, Knox County, Maine. This was told by her great- grandson who was told by his grandmother, Cora Hewitt Whitney, the daughter aforementioned.
