Jack J. Van Erden, 69, of 744 Darling, died Sunday, Jan. 1, 1984, at the McKay-Dee Hospital after a lingering illness.

He was born Oct. 2, 1914, in Ogden, a son of Arend and Kathryn Bakker Van Erden. He married Dorathea Monahan on May 31, 1936, in Ogden. The marriage was later solemnized in the Ogden LDS Temple in 1979.

He was a sporting goods buyer for Read Brothers Sporting Goods before retiring. He had also worked for the John Scowcroft Co. and Gibsons in Ogden.

He had lived in Montana and Minnesota. He graduated from Ogden High School and Weber College.

He was a high priest in the Ogden 17th LDS Ward where he had served as finance clerk for many years, and worked in the MIA and in scouting.

He was a former member of the Elks Lodge.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army in the South Pacific.

Surviving are his widow of Ogden; one son, Dr. James D. Van Erden, Alexandria, VA; three foster sons, Richard C. Smith, Provo; Scott Fleming, Steamboat Springs, Colo.; Vinh K. Ly, Provo; one daughter-in-law, Mrs. Ruth Van Erden, Riverdale; three grandchildren.

Also surviving are two brothers and one sister, Harry Van Erden, Peter Van Erden and Lita Foster, all of Ogden.

He was preceded in death by one son, Jeffery Allen Van Erden.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 11 a.m. in Lindquist and Sons Colonial Chapel with Bishop Carl Ray Wiese of the 17th Ward officiating.

Friends may call at the mortuary Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Thursday one hour prior to services. Interment in the Ogden City Cemetery.

The family suggests in lieu of flowers contributions to the Neurological Research Department, University of Utah Medical Center in Salt Lake City.
