James was the second child and second son of Parish Garner and Mary Elizabeth "Polly" (Duncan McManus) Story. He married Frances Maria Dikis 9 December 1858 in Morgan County, Illinois. They had eight children of their own: Robert, Newton, Clara B., Tilden D., George J., Martha E., Mary L., and Nettie P. Story. The children were all born in Illinois, but the family moved west to Kansas before the children were grown.
