In June 1862, he enlisted in the Federal Army and mustered out in Louisville, Kentucky in July 1965. His unit was at the battle of Shiloh. James married Matilda Catherine Asher on February 14, 1867. He farmed until 1880; when he was elected Marshall and Collector of Maysville, Missouri. He held this position about two years and then made an unsuccessful canvass for Sheriff of DeKalb County, but was elected two years later. He and his family moved to a farm in Osborne County, Kansas. During the Oklahoma Territory Land Run, he obtained a homestead near Marshall and later moved to a farm about 5 miles west of Guthrie.
