JOHN DOWNEY WAS MARRIED TO DEBORAH HINTON
History of the Downey's moving to Rush County, IN. (Added by powellkp48 on 11 Oct 2008)
The Downey's owned a small plantation in Nicholas County, Kentucky, and a few slaves. Archibald, the patriarch, died in 1815 at the age of 45, leaving the responsibility of the plantation to his oldest son John and his widow Sarah Cook Downey. For unknown reasons, youngest son Jacob moved to Rush County, Indiana, upon his marriage in 1830. The rest of his family followed his lead in moving to Rush County, Indiana, from Nicholas County, Kentucky, between 1830 and 1834. We do know that on August 9, 1831, James hired a man to move his family from their small plantation in Kentucky to Rushville, a small settlement in Rush County, Indiana. He arrived in Rushville on August 16, 1831, after a week's journey. On October 3, 1831, about 6 weeks later, he entered his tract of land in Jackson Township (later to become Posey Township). He moved into a rude log cabin on that land on January 31, 1832. James and Jacob Downey were staunch Democrats. James told everyone he voted for Andrew Jackson in 1828.
Jacob died in 1866, but in 1887 James was the sole pioneer still residing on the land he entered at the ripe old age of 82. He passed away on August 30, 1887. He (James) and his brothers, Jacob and John, married 3 Hinton sisters. James married Rebecca Hinton; Jacob married Margaret Hinton; and John married Deborah Hinton. The Hinton's are of German descent and the Downey's are Irish.
The Hinton sisters were the daughters of Ezekiel and Martha (Caldwell) Hinton. The Hinton's hailed from Maryland and the Caldwell's from Pennsylvania. The Downey's were also from Pennsylvania.
We're not sure what inspired the widow and children of Archibald Downey to move to Rush County, Indiana, but they did in the early 1830s. Eventually, all of Archibald's children, including the eldest son John, and Archibald's widow, Sarah (Cook) Downey, moved on to Iowa in a few years, except for James and Jacob Downey, who remained and thrived in Rush County, Indiana.
