He was born September 17, 1921 in St. Louis, Missouri, one of two children to Edward and Louise Deffner Gengler; he moved to Connersville at the age of seven and was a graduate of Connersville High School.
During WWII, he served with the U.S. Army as a radio operator in the signal corp serving in the Aleutian Islands.
On October 29, 1960, he was married to Barbara J. "Pinky" Walker, a native of New Castle; Mrs. Gengler died February 2, 2005.
For a number of years, he owned and operated Back's Television and Appliance Service and also was a projectionist at Times Theater locally.
He was a member of St. Gabriel Church, an honorary member of the Knights of Columbus # 861, a sixty-five year member, and enjoyed bowling in the K of C league; he also was an avid golfer and a loyal fan of the St. Louis Cardinals.
Survivors include three nieces, Margaret Fowler, Dorothy Szramkowski and Jeanette Behan all of St. Louis, Missouri, great nieces, Laura Siebert and Linda King, also of St. Louis, Missouri, and great nephews, John Behan and Will Behan, both of St. Louis, Missouri; locally, he was also blessed with a number of great nieces and nephews.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, Maurice Gengler, his parents and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM Tuesday, March 13, 2012, at St. Gabriel Church with Reverend Stanley J. Herber officiating; burial with military rites will be in Dale Cemetery – family and friends may call at Miller, Moster, Robbins Funeral Home from 5 to 7 PM Monday, March 12, with a Rosary being recited at 4:30 PM and at the church Tuesday from 9 AM until the time of the Mass.
Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Gabriel Church Endowment Fund.
