James was born August 21, 1931, in Olean, NY and resided at Founders Pavilion of Corning, NY. He was the son of the late J. Meryle and Genevieve (Tracy) Havens.
James graduated from Middlebury College (1953), had a Masters from Florida State University College (1956), a second Masters from London University, London England (1962), and a Ph.D from London University, London England (1969).
He was a glacial-climatologist. From 1965-1970, he was an assistant Professor at the University of Western Ontario, London, Ontario, Canada. From 1970-1980, He was an associate Professor at the University of Rhode Island, Kingston, RI.
James was a Navy veteran and a traveler who had explored much of Europe. After his retirement from the University of Rhode Island, both his hobby and his passion were antique glass.
He is buried in the Havens family plot in Mount View Cemetery, Olean, NY.
