We celebrate the life of Charlie Marie Harrell Joiner who passed away on Friday, March 9, 2012, in San Angelo, Texas. She was born Sept. 8, 1921, to Rouelle Hollingsworth and Charles Clarence Harrell in Sherman, Texas. She was the third child after sisters Thelma Louise Harrell and Doris Catherine Harrell. Her father, Charles, passed away before she was born and thus she was named Charlie.

She graduated from Sherman High School in 1938, and from Austin College in 1941. She had her first date with her future husband, Bennett Anderson Joiner, while they were both seniors at Sherman High School. They both went to Austin College and continued to see each other after Bennett left Sherman for medical school and she worked at a bank in Sherman. They were married in Sherman on June 12, 1943, and moved to Philadelphia where Bennett completed his medical degree.

They spent six years in Iowa and then chose to establish a medical practice in San Angelo because San Angelo provided a great environment to raise a family. Charlie and Bennett shared 63 years together before he died in 2006. They were model parents and nurturing grandparents. We will be forever blessed by their legacy of the love of Christ, love of family and unconditional love and respect for all. Charlie was a caring and dignified lady. She will be dearly missed. She was a member of Alpha Delta Chi and Kappa Gamma Chi at Austin College. While in San Angelo, she was active in Junior League and Concho Valley Medical Auxiliary. She was a member of the Johnson Street Church of Christ.

She is survived by her children, Dr. Bennett Anderson Joiner Jr. and wife Sharon of Austin, Ann Marie Evans and husband Mike of Houston, Dr. Charles Steven Joiner and wife Margaret Ann of Cupertino, Calif., and Carol Lynn Doggett and husband Scott of Dallas.

And the grandchildren, Sara Rouelle Joiner of Bellevue, Wash., Thomas Bennett Joiner of Dallas, Julie Evans Schaferling and husband Jim of Montgomery, Michelle Evans Schwabe and husband Nick of Dallas, Charles Steven Joiner Jr. and wife Cari of Newbury Park, Calif., Michael Bennett Joiner and wife Katie of Goleta, Calif., David Gordon Joiner and wife Elizabeth of Los Angeles and Turner Anderson Doggett of Dallas.

And the great-grandchildren, Charles Bennett Schaferling, Emily Ann Schwabe and Michael Zumwalt Schwabe, Lillian Margaret Joiner and Benjamin Charles Joiner. We believe that she served God's purpose.

The family requests that memorials be given to Sherman Preservation League; or Johnson Street Church of Christ in San Angelo, Texas. Visitation will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday March 16, 2012, at Johnson's Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday March 17, 2012, in Johnson's Funeral Home chapel with Tommy King, minister of Johnson Street Church of Christ officiating. Burial will follow in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are by Johnson's Funeral Home.
