James Hoey's cremated remains were not initially taken after his death and were available at Oregon State Hospital to be claimed by anyone who is related. In 2022 a relative received the ashes.

He was born in Pembroke, Ontario, Canada. According to church records he was born on 12/18/1863 and baptized in the Catholic Church on 12/20/1863. Early census records support that. However documents that are less credible give his birth year between 1864 to 1878.

All four of James' grandparents immigrated from Ireland to Canada. Both his parents, Sarah Martin and Patrick Hoey, were born in Canada - his mother in 1841, and his father about 1837. Sarah & Patrick were married in the cathedral in Pembroke on 5/17/1859. Their children were: Julia (born in 1861), James (1863), Thomas (1865), Emma (1872), Anna (about 1875), and William (1883). Julia, James, & Thomas were born in Canada while Emma, Anna, & William were born in Illinois after the Hoey family immigrated to the US about 1867.

During the 1870 census, James (age 6) was attending school, living in Chicago, Illinois with his parents, and siblings Julia & Thomas. The younger children had not yet been born. His father was a blacksmith which was the career he followed most of his adult life.

At the time of the 1880 census, James was 16, working as a driver in the coal industry, and living with his parents & 4 siblings in Chicago on Archer Avenue. His youngest brother William had not yet been born.

In the 1880s James and some of his family appeared in the Chicago City Directory. In 1882 he was listed as being in the coal business with his father doing business as Hoey & Son. In 1887 he was living on Archer Avenue and working as a postal carrier. Also listed in the home was his brother Thomas and their father who was in the coal industry.

On 12/3/1887 James married 18 year old Theresa Lynch who was born in Illinois about 1869. They had one child about 1888, but nothing else is known of the child. Theresa filed for divorce in October 1888 alleging that he was abusive.

James mother died at the age of 52 on 2/17/1893 in Chicago and was buried at Calvary Cemetery. His brother Thomas married Nora Gormary. He died on 5/26/1893 and was buried with his mother.

James has not been found in the censuses of 1900, 1910 & 1920, but in 1900 his widowed father and siblings were all living together in Chicago with Julia, her husband and children.

In the decade between 1910 and 1920 James lost 4 more members of his birth family. They were all buried with James' mother at Calvary Cemetery in Evanston, Illinois. His sister Julia (Hoey) Foster died on 2/18/1911 at the age of 49. James' brother William (age 28) died in Chicago on 9/23/1911. James' father died in Chicago on 4/27/1915 and James' sister Emma (age 38) died in Chicago on 10/15/1918. James was not acknowledged in their obituaries. Perhaps he was estranged or maybe he was thought to be dead.

In the 1930 & 1940 censuses James was living alone in Toledo, Lincoln County, Oregon. In 1930 he was a single carpenter while in 1940 he was unable to work and was reportedly a widower. While James was living in Oregon, Anna Hoey, the last of his siblings, died on 3/16/1937 in Oak Park near Chicago. She was buried with her parents and siblings.

On 7/15/1942 from Lincoln County James was sent to the Oregon State Hospital, a residential facility in Salem, Oregon for the treatment of people with mental illness. After being a patient at the institution for less than 2 months, James died at OSH of a brain hemorrhage on 9/8/1942. He was 78 years old.

After James' divorce from Theresa nothing is known of what became of their child. His closest known living relatives are descendants of his sister Julie who is his only sibling known to have had children. Julia married George Peter Foster, a teacher and lawyer who became a US congressman in 1899 - 1905. Julia & George had four children, three of whom survived childhood: George Peter, Jr., Raymond Francis, and Willard James each of whom spent their lives in Illinois. Since their mother died in 1911 when they were teenagers and young adults, it is likely they knew nothing of James' circumstances.
