Mary Ann was the youngest child of George and Caroline Blenkarn and also the only daughter. She was born at Pearson Street, Kingsland Road and was baptized at Holywell Chapel in July 1842 by Rev. E. E. Mannering. Mary Ann married Russell R. Sharman on 26 Sep 1866. They never had any children. Mary Ann was known as Aunt May to her neices and nephews.
