George M. Armstrong, 94, of Burns died May 29 at his farm near Burns.

He was born Dec. 6, 1911, in Mount Sterling, Ill., the son of Bruce and Ina Fay Armstrong.

He was a young child when the family moved from Illinois to a dry land farm in the Burns, Golden Prairie Community in 1916.

He was educated in several rural schools in the Golden Prairie area, and in 1930, graduated from Burns High School.

In 1934, he married Dott Davis, and they moved onto the old Debruyn place west of Albin. The sudden death of his father, Bruce, required that they moved back to the home place, and there they built their home and raised their family.

Born to this union were Donna Hodges (Wesley) and Larry L. Armstrong (Bonnie).

Melvin was a lifetime member of Golden Prairie Baptist and served as President of the Wyoming Wheatgrowers Association.

He was an innovative farmer and liked to try new techniques and machines to boost wheat yields. He was also an accomplished hog producer and had the community's only blue school bus delivery service to market.

He is survived by his wife of 72 years (together, they shared 23 years as visitor/snowbirds in Mesa, Ariz.); his daughter, Donna Hodges of Lake Park, Minn.; son, Larry L. on the home place and their spouses; seven grandchildren, Scott Hodges of Danville, Ind., Steve Hodges (Amy) of Manhattan, Kan., Kent Hodges (Heidi) of Moorhead, Minn., Kathy Cressy (Doug) of Monticello, Minn., and Kurt Hodges (Anna) of Wolverton, Minn., Jeff Armstrong (Brenda) of Pine Bluffs, and Angela Armstrong-Waddington (Gordie) of Saukville, Wis.; 18 great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Fayann Cain of Kimball, Neb.; and two nephews, Dr. David Cain of Foley, Ala.; and Dr. Michael Cain (Lisa) of Corning, N.Y., and their families.

He was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; and a brother-in-law, Wayne Cain.
