Herbert E. Simmons, 95, formerly of Lancaster, died on Friday, March 9, 2012 at St. Martha's Manor, Downingtown, Pennsylvania.

Born in Lancaster on April 5, 1916, he was the son of the late Ross and Virginia Simmons. He was married for 67 years to Marian Hacker Simmons until the time of her passing in 2006.

Mr. Simmons worked in the linoleum factory at Armstrong for more than 40 years.

He was a member and past president of the Manor Ridge Lions Club, receiving the Melvin Jones Fellow award in 1991. Along with his wife, he volunteered for the Lancaster Blind Association for 25 years where they were recognized as Volunteer Couple of the Year in 1988. He enjoyed playing golf until the age of 90 and driving his car until age 93.

He was a member of the Church of the Apostles ­United Church of Christ.

He was a lifetime resident of Lancaster until moving to Downingtown to be close to his family in December 2009.

Herb is survived by a son, Larry Simmons, of Glenside, PA and his partner James Akerberg; a daughter, Ann L., wife of Robert L. Hogarth of Downingtown; three grandchildren: Stephanie, Kimberly and Robert; six great-grandchildren and a brother, Jay Simmons of Lancaster. He was preceded in death by his wife; two brothers: ­Kenneth and Ross Simmons, and a sister, Evelyn Frey.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Herb's Life Celebration Memorial Service at Zion's Reformed United Church of Christ, 1356 Apple St., Ephrata, PA on Saturday at 11:00 AM with the Rev. Richard W. Cowles officiating. Inurnment will be held at Lincoln Cemetery, Ephrata. The family will receive friends at the church from 10:30 AM until the time of service. Please omit flowers. The family requests that memorials be sent in Herbert's memory to the Susquehanna Association for the Blind & Vision Impaired, 224 N. Queen St., Lancaster, PA 17603.
