Charles’ cremated remains were never taken after his death and are still available at the Oregon State Hospital to be claimed by anyone who is related. The Oregon list of unclaimed cremains shows his name as Charles Frohwerk with an alternate name of Carl Frowerk. In this bio Charles Frohwerk will be used because in no documents has he been listed as Carl and Frohwerk is 10 times more common as a surname than Frowerk. Charles Frohwerk is also the name written on his death certificate.

In the Portland city directory of 1906 Charles was listed as a logger from that city. In the 1913 city directory for Astoria, a coastal town on the northern Oregon coast. Charles was listed as a “boomman,” one who operates the controls of a loading boom or crane. This was probably related to the shipping industry.

On 5/30/1913 he was admitted to the Oregon State Hospital, a residential facility in Salem, Oregon for the treatment of people with mental illness. The staff did not know his age but estimated him to be about 30 years old. they did not know his birthplace, but on one document (1940 census) they reported he was a US citizen born abroad. On other documents it was said he was born in the US. the staff consistently reported Charles was single.

Charles was probably released about 1916 because he appeared in the 1917 Portland city directory. No occupation was given. It is likely he returned quickly to the asylum. He was listed in the censuses of 1920, 1930 and 1940 as a patient at OSH. In all he was a resident at that facility for over 30 years. He died there on 1/12/1944 of hear and kidney problems.
