Catherine was thought to have been born in England. Records show, however, that she was actually born in India, as were her five siblings, to a member of the British Army, 96th of Foot, India. He was Soldier #423. His name was Henry Rainbow, and he was born in England.

Catherine's headstone says she was born in 1883. This is most likely due to the difference in her age and that of her husband, Charles Sherwood. Catherine's daughter, Grace (Sherwood) Knauss, said her mother was always secretive about her age. Her various American records show her having been born between 1893 and 1899.

She was married to Alexander George May on April 27, 1899 in Mhow, Bengal, India. She was, in fact, also born there and in 1880, according to her birth record, a much more reliable source. Her father was a British soldier, and her first husband was an electrical engineer. She, of course, thought of herself as British - which she was, and perhaps that's why her American records show England as her place of birth. They came to the U.S. in 1913 with their two surviving children. While she said she was born in England, she did tell her children about her life in India when England ruled that country.

Her second husband was Charles Edgar "Dick" Sherwood, also known as Richard Walker. The 1920 census for Stockton, San Joaquin County, California shows the entire family living with the name, Walker, with the head of household being Richard Walker. By 1930, they were back to using their surname, Sherwood. By then, they were living in Vallejo, Solano County, California.

Catherine was a member of Vallejo's Ascension Episcopal Church.
