Elizabeth Marie Strube Ahrens was born April 11, 1916, near Germantown (Mercier) of rural Brown County, the eighth of nine children born to George and Mary Heers Strube. She died Monday, March 12, 2012, at Ottawa Retirement Village in Ottawa, Kansas, at the age of 95.

Elizabeth lived on a farm outside of Powhattan where she attended country school thru the eighth grade prior to attending and later graduating with the class of 1936 at Horton High School. Elizabeth received her bachelor's degree from Pittsburg Teachers College prior to receiving her master's degree from Colorado State College at Greeley. She taught in several country schools in the Nemaha and Brown County areas including Victory and Hickory Grove schools.

She married Alfred R. Ahrens, Jr. of Pittsburg, Kansas, May 23, 1948. She taught in Altamont, Kansas until 1951. After her children were born, she returned to teaching in 1960 and taught Home Economics at Ranchester, WY until 1963. They moved to Powhattan to make their home where she taught in Willis, KS until 1965, and Horton until 1967. From 1967 until her retirement in 1986, Elizabeth was the librarian at Sabetha High School.

Mrs. Ahrens was a longtime member of the Zion Lutheran Church of Powhattan and the Lutheran Women's Missionary League. Elizabeth was awarded a Kansas Lifetime Teaching Certificate, which is very rare to receive. She loved cooking, baking, sewing and gardening. She was a member of Alpha Kappa Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma International Sorority.

Elizabeth was preceded in death by her husband Alfred March 10, 2000; her siblings: Bill Strube, Alma Ross, Margaret Bruner, Clara Johannes, George Strube, Martin Strube, Minnie Bauman, and Lucinda Streit.

Survivors include a son Tim (Susan) Ahrens of Ottawa; two daughters: Juanita Ahrens of Topeka, Doris Ahrens of Manhattan; three grandchildren: Tyler Ahrens of Ottawa, Tony Ahrens of Kansas City, MO, and Amanda Ahrens also of Ottawa.

Funeral services are planned for 10 a.m. Saturday, March 17, at Zion Lutheran Church of Powhattan, with Pastor Charlie Adams of Ottawa officiating. Interment will follow at Powhattan Cemetery.
