STANLEY - Fred Albert Cloninger, 87, of 1121 Alexis Lucia Road, died March 11, 2012.

He was born Jan. 18, 1925, in Gaston County, son of the late Oscar and Gertrude Best Cloninger.

He went to Stanley High School and graduated in May of 1942 as class Salutatorian. He graduated from Belmont Abbey College in June 1948 with a degree in Business Administration. He graduated from UNC Chapel Hill in May of 1950 with a B.A. in Education.

He served in the US Navy as a Signalman 2nd Class, from May 1944 until May 1946.

He is survived by his wife Ruth Lineberger Cloninger, who were married December 19, 1948. Fred and Ruth met at their church, Christ Lutheran in Stanley. They became engaged on September 8, 1948 "Ruth's birthday" and married December 19, 1948. In March 1952 they bought the old Wade Abernathy farm and it became a beef cattle farm.

He taught school for 32 years in Gaston County Schools teaching Math, Science, and Shop. He retired in 1987.

In addition to his wife he is survived by children Michael and his wife Margaret Anne, Larry and his wife Lisa, Lewis, Cindy Keefer and her husband Joe, and Norman and his wife Kelly. Grandchildren Russell, Jennifer, Amanda, Chris, Joe, and Emily. A great grandchild Aiden. Brothers Mack Cloninger, Floyd Cloninger, Oscar "Top" Cloninger. Sisters Martha Dean Lineberger and Ruth Hopkins.

He was preceded in death by 2 brothers Grady Cloninger and Ray Cloninger and 1 sister Mary Fisher.

A service to celebrate the life of Mr. Cloninger will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday at Christ's Lutheran Church in Stanley with the Revs. Jack and Linda McHenry officiating.

Burial will be at Hillcrest Gardens Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Wednesday at the church.
