Mary Miller, daughter of William and Martha Cable Burton, was raised in the NE corner of TN near the NC border. In her teens, she worked as a cook at her father's sawmill camp feeding the laborers. It was there she met the man she married, Avery Miller.

They lived in New River NC where five sons were born. In 1915, they bought a 100 acre farm near Butler TN. Two daughters and two more sons were born there.

Mary, known as Maw by relatives and friends alike, was a devout and loving woman. The cornerstone of her family, she raised not only her own children but five of her son Frank's children and several nieces and nephews.
