Daughter of Henry and Elizabeth (Birdsell) Smothers.

Hattie was married in Delaware County, Ohio, on October 31, 1880 to Edmond Buell Skeels, son of Russell and Jane Skeels.

They were the parents of five children, two of whom died young. These included Ethland "Ethel" Jane, born in Genoa Township, Delaware County, Ohio, on October 2, 1881; Russell Henry "Harry", born in Scioto Township, Delaware County, Ohio, on February 10, 1887; Jane "Jennie" born in Ohio on February 16, 1890; and William I., born in Ostrander, Ohio, on January 17, 1892 (died young).

Her husband, a blacksmith, died at Stratford on August 3, 1894. Hattie was living with her children and mother in Delaware, Ohio, in 1900, and Altamont, Illinois, with her sister Sarah Smothers, in 1910.
