William is the son of George Pumphrey and Ellen (Costeen) Pumphrey. Husband of Bertha Rosa (Koch) Pumphrey.
Dr Pumphrey was a well known veterinarian in Northern Missouri. He married Bertha Rosa Koch in 1900 and within a few years they both contracted tuberculosis. Their only child was a daughter, Carol, born in Chariton County in 1903. Around 1905 they moved to Artesia in Eddy County, New Mexico hoping that the drier desert air would provide relief from their ailment. Unfortunately, this did not work and Dr Pumphrey died in Artesia in 1907. He was buried in Artesia at Woodbine Cemetery.
The following year his wife, Bertha, also died from tuberculosis but her remains were sent back to Chariton County for burial. Their daughter, Carol, was then raised by her Koch grandparents who still lived in Chariton County. Dr Pumphrey's name was inscribed on Bertha's gravestone as a memorial even though his interment was in New Mexico.
