Wendell Phillips Atherton, son of H.M. and Olive (Phillips) Atherton, was born June 3, 1902 at Salina, KS. His death occurred Monday Sept. 11, 1995 in the Russell Regional Hospital in Russell, KS at the age of 93 years, 3 months, 8 days.

Wendell's early life was spent in Salina where he attended the local schools. On June 30, 1925 he was united in marriage with Alma Fose who preceded him in death on Nov. 17, 1989. This happy union was blessed with one daughter, Patricia Ann.

Wendell first worked in the newspaper business, having progressed from delivering papers for the Salina Journal to being advertising manager for the Russell Record to being owner and publisher of the LaCrosse Chieftain, LaCrosse, KS. In 1935, the family moved to Inglewood, CA where Wendell worked for the Herald Express. The family returned to Russell in 1937 where Wendell operated the Fose Grain Co. until 1951; then Atherton Iron and Salvage Co. in partnership with R.L. Daniels.

Wendell was active in the Trinity United Methodist Church, Elks Lodge #1750, Russell Masonic Lodge AF & AM #177, Salina Consistory, ISIS Shrine, Russell Shrine Club and the local chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. He also served as a Russell Councilman during the 1940's.

He is survived by his daughter, Patricia Ann Holland of Russell; two grandchildren: LuAnn Perez of Cameron Park, CA; and Wendell Holland of Russell; three gt. grandchildren; one sister Kirsten Grothaus of Tucson, AZ; his two special friends, Dave and Elsie Ehrlich, a number of relatives & friends.
