AARONSBURG - John I. Poorman, 75, of Aaronsburg, passed from this life on Nov. 20, 2009, at Mount Nittany Medical Center in State College.

John, the son of the late Yarnell D. Poorman, Sr. and Helen S. Lucas Poorman, was born on April 6, 1934, in Marion Township. John attended Howard High School. On Sept. 17, 1955, he married Lois M. Stover. Mrs. Poorman survives at their home in Aaronsburg.

John was a member of the Salem Lutheran Church in Aaronsburg. He began his employment with the Jacksonville Quarry. Then he worked as a builder for Eastern States, Pleasant Gap Lime Co. and HRI.

John was best known for the welding shop he formerly owned and operated with his sons Roger and David. He was well known for his welding and heavy equipment operating skills. John also farmed in Haines Township.

John was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, having served his country in the U.S. Marines. In addition to his wife, John is survived by two daughters, Teresa A. Homan and Karen E. (Curtis) Stover; by two sons, David J. (Tammy) Poorman and Roger L. (Brenda) Poorman all of Aaronsburg; by seven grandchildren, Jamie, Jason and Jacob Homan; Lyle and Lucas Stover and David II and Alyssa Poorman; and by one great-grandson, Aaron Bolick Jr.
Also surviving are five sisters; Shirley Dolan and Joy (Ray) Gutshall of Howard, Bonnie Lou Navaretti of Colorado, Kitty Mae (Don) Miller and Dolly Dunlap both of Bellefonte, and one brother James Ray (Stella) Poorman Sr. of Mill Hall.

Family and friends will be received at the Steven R. Neff Funeral Home in Millheim from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 22, 2009. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 23, 2009, at the Salem Lutheran Church in Aaronsburg with the Rev. Nathan Pile officiating. Burial will be in the Salem Lutheran Cemetery.
