James was the first born of Miles K. Shiver and May Mary Harper. James is listed in the 1860 census of Henry County, Alabama as being 10 months old which clearly shows his birth does not match his headstone. He left home as a teenager and went to Pensacola and worked for the railroad and later settled in Monroe County , Alabama and was the general manager of Bear Creek Mill and Lumber. He married Louisianna Grissett on July 10, 1884 in Escambia County, Alabama.
