Katherine Tyler Ellett, of Roanoke, died Monday, December 8, 2003. Born in Richmond, Va., Mrs. Ellett was the daughter of Susette Garnett Beale and Walter Gresham Tyler. She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Arthur Tazewell Ellett and her sister, Francis Tyler Siegel of, Richmond and was a graduate of Westhampton College of the University of Richmond. A promoter of the arts, she was a member of the founding committee of the Roanoke Fine Arts Center, serving as its second president and later as president of the Virginia Arts Alliance of the Virginia Museum. She was also an early president of the Women's Auxiliary of Roanoke Symphony. Mrs. Ellett was named Roanoke's first Mother of the Year for Arts and Sciences in 1955. She chaired the women's activities on the steering committee for Roanoke's 75th Anniversary of 1957. She was author of the book "Roanoke Fine Arts Center, 1952-1977", published by the center in honor of its 25th birthday. She was an active member of St. John's Episcopal Church. She was affiliated with many historical organizations including the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America, the Society of the Lees of Virginia, the Mayflower Society, the Daughters of the Cincinnati, the Roanoke Historical Society, and the Daughters of the American Revolution. Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Frank and Lucy Russell Ellett; her daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Park Beaver; her grandchildren, Frank Russell Ellett, Katherine Sinclair Ellett Gillespie, Katherine Tyler Beaver LeSage, Stephanie Beaver Raine and Sheila Beaver Van Newhyzen; and seven great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church Friday, December 12, 2003, 2 p.m. with a reception immediately following. The burial will be private for the family. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to St. John's Episcopal Church or a charity of your choice. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Oakey's Downtown Roanoke Chapel.
