Mass of Christian burial for Maria L. Peterson of Amity will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday in St. James Catholic Church, McMinnville, with the Rev. Thomas Farley officiating.

Vigil will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday in the church.

Interment will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, River Grove, Ill.

The chapel of Macy & Son Funeral Directors, McMinnville, will be open for visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Mrs. Peterson died March 25, 2000, in her home. She was 77.

She was born April 13, 1922, in Kansas City, Mo., the daughter of Vaughan and Jessie-Lea Messick Williams. She was raised and educated in Kansas City, Mo. She graduated from Beloit College in Beloit, Wis., with a degree in English. She belonged to the Kappa Delta sorority.

She and Kenneth H. Peterson were married Aug. 14, 1943, in Boston.

She lived in Chicago most of her life. She moved to Sunnyvale, Calif., in 1963 and moved back to Chicago in 1965. She remained in Chicago until 1996, when she moved to Madison, Wis. She moved to Amity in 1999 to be with her son.

Mrs. Peterson belonged to St. James Catholic Church. She loved gardening and cats and was an avid figure skating fan.

Survivors include three sons, Lawrence Peterson of Evergreen, Colo., Harold Peterson of San Jose, Calif., and John Peterson of Amity; two daughters, Polly Kotarba of Bellaire, Texas, and Jane Ganz of McFarland, Wis.; a sister, Marian Gaskill of Weston, Mo.; and nine grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband on June 16, 1964.
