DEATH OF JESSE L. BARTOO

Jesse L. Bartoo, who was probably the eldest man in western Kansas, died at the home of his son, J. K. Bartoo, in this city on Friday morning, July 9th, 1897, of old age, aged ninety years. Mr. Bartoo was a resident of this city for the past seven years, during a greater portion of which time he has been deaf and blind. The funeral services were held at the residence of his son on Saturday morning at half past nine o'clock, under the auspices of B. F. Larned Post, No. 8, G.A.R., of which organization he was a respected member. Rev. W. E. Woodward, pastor of the Methodist church, officiated and the remains were laid to rest in the Larned cemetery. He leaves eight children to mourn his death.

Jesse L. Bartoo was born in Chenango county, New York, on May 28th, 1808, and was married at the age of twenty years. Of this union he had ten children, eight of whom survive him. In 1830 he moved to Steuben county, New York, and from there he moved to Cattaraugus county, where his wife died in 1858. He was again married in 1859, but had no children. His second wife died in about two years after their marriage. In 1861 he enlisted in Co. B. Ninth New York cavalry, and served two years, when he was discharged for disability, and since that time has drawn a pension of from four to twelve dollars per month.

After his return from the army he made his home with his children in New York, Pennsylvania, Nebraska and Kansas. He came to Larned in 1890, since which time, owing to failing health and disabilities, he has made his home with his son, J. K. Bartoo. Mr. Bartoo was a man of wonderful vitality and of a retiring disposition, and was seldom seen away from his home. For the past five years he has been almost entirely blind and very deaf.
