Between 1931 and 1950, Sam played as a shortstop, an outfielder, second baseman and also as a manager for various teams in the Negro Baseball League. The teams included the Birmingham Black Barons, Louisville Black Caps, Kansas City Monarchs, the Nashville Elite Giants, the Pittsburgh Crawfords, Trujillo All-Stars, the Toledo Crawfords, Homestead Grays,and the Denver Post Negro All-Stars. He was Josh Gibson's best friend. His batting average was .387 and was considered one of black baseball's greatest players, yet he is not in the Cooperstown Hall of Fame.
