JONESPORT - Harold Freeman (Buz) Beal Jr., 75, passed away at home in Jonesport on Tuesday, February 28, 2012, surrounded by his family. The son of Harold F. Beal and Phyllis (Worcester) Beal. Buz was born in Jonesport on July 19, 1936. He served in the Coast Guard for 26 years and retired as a chief boatswain's mate. After a move to Corinth, he went to work at Dexter Shoe Co., where he met Helen, the love of his life. They settled down in Jonesport in 1983. Soon thereafter Buz and Helen, with their nephew, Harry Fish Jr., began to build the Maine Central Model Railroad, an HO-scale layout that grew to fill a 900-square-foot building near their home. Thousands of visitors from all over the world have viewed the extensively detailed Downeast attraction. Featured on WLBZ-TV, WABITV, Lubec public cable TV, and in "Yankee" magazine, the model railroad is also recommended by many Maine travel guides. Buz is survived by his loving wife of 25 years, Helen (Grinnell) Beal. He also leaves two children from an earlier marriage, Lisa (Beal) Priest and her husband, Brian, and Harold Arnold Beal; two stepsons, Alan Philbrook and James Wright; a very special nephew, Harry Fish Jr. and his wife, Sherry; three special nieces, Sandi (Libby) Cyr, Laura (Fish) Herzog, and Lisa (Cyr) Buchanan; and several cousins, as well as a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and many dear friends. He was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Eula K. (Beal) Fish. At Buz's request, there will be no services. However, friends are invited to visit his remarkable creation, the Maine Central Model Railroad, which his wife and nephew will continue to operate. Donations are welcome.
