Harold was born August 1, 1914 in Hastings (Adams County) Nebraska born to the proud parents Jacob and Alice(Rueber). His parents had married in Russia on April 28, 1912 and immigrated in 1913 to Hastings, Nebraska. Harold had one younger brother Raymond- born January 29,1922, two younger sisters born after Harold's loss of life- Helen born April 12. 1928 and Stella born July 28, 1931.
Harold and is family moved to Shawnee, Wyoming, living three miles north of Shawnee where his family ranched.

When Harold was only 13,in 1926 the unthinkable happened. Harold had gone out to check cattle, somehow the rope around his horses neck became intertwined around his foot, speculation is the horse bolted and dragged Harold nearly a mile from where his hat and other articles had been dropped from his pocket. The body was discovered when the horse dragged Harold home. Neighborhood rumors suspected a possibility of foul play due to Harold crossing on their land on the way to school. This led to an investigation by Coroner Hofmann to impanel a jury, consisting of George Ullman, W. O. Logan and Charles Hunt. Thorough investigation showed that the death was accidental.
