Barton was the son of Albert and Sibyl (Howard) DeCoster.

Barton married Susan J. Hicks on 20 June 1867 in Stoughton, Norfolk, Massachusetts. They were the parents of 4 children: George B., Orrianna J., Henry A., and Frederick H.

Barton enlisted in Company K, Massachusetts 11th Infantry Regiment. He was reportedly killed in the Battle of Chancellorville from wounds he received during the battle. His death is recorded in vital records of Stoughton, Massachusetts. Barton did not die. His mother did apply for Barton's pension in October, 1863. According to Barton's pension documents, he was captured as a prisoner of war. There are also records that he re-enlisted on 27 June 1863 in Co. G, 12th Regiment New York Calvary under the assumed name of Albert Ross.

Barton also had a troubled married life. By 1880, he was no longer living with Susan. In his pension documents, he claimed in 1899 that his wife had eloped with another man. He also states that he had no children.

Barton lived in Avon (Stoughton) until the late 1880s, and eventually moved to Troy, South Dakota where he lived until 1897. He then moved to Kingston, Minnesota where his sister Flora lived. He later moved into the Minnesota Soldiers Home.
