CW3 (Ret.) George A. Babb, age 90, resident of Columbus, died on Sunday, March 4, 2012. Graveside services will be held at Parkhill Cemetery, Chapel of the Pines on Wednesday, March 7, 2012 at 2:00 PM with the Reverends T. Thad Smith officiating. The family will receive friends at the cemetery one hour prior to the service.

Mr. Babb was born February 4, 1922 in Carthage, Mississippi to the late Elijah Alfred and Trudie Babb Williamson. He proudly served 21 years in the U.S. Army and saw action in the European Theater during World War II. Other assignments carried him to Korea; Kobe-Osaka, Japan; Frankfurt, Germany; Fort Polk, LA; Fort Riley, KS; Fort Knox, KY; and several tours at Fort Benning, GA, where he retired. He also proudly toured the World War II Memorial in Washington, DC aboard the Veteran’s Freedom Flight. Distinguished military decorations/honors received included two Bronze Stars, Parachute Badge; Combat Infantryman’s Badge; Good Conduct Medal; European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with three Bronze Stars; American Defense Service Medal; Distinguished Unit Badge with two Clusters; WWII Victory Medal; National Defense Service Medal; Japanese Occupation Medal.

After retirement from the military, Mr. Babb was employed by Interstate Life Insurance Company and as a Bus Driver for the Muscogee County School District. He was also the owner/operator of Babb’s Lawnmower Repair Shop in Columbus. Mr. Babb was a member of Morningside Baptist Church, where he was a former Deacon, Sunday School teacher and groundskeeper. In addition to his parents, Mr. Babb was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Christine Babb; three brothers, Dewitt Babb, E.A. Babb, Jr., and Woodrow Babb; and two sisters, Dorothy Mae Hebert and Evon Richardson.

Mr. Babb is survived by a sister, Melba Taylor of Vicksburg, MS; a son, Dr. Michael Babb and wife Sandy of Eufaula, AL; a daughter, Janice Dybdahl and husband Fred of Maitland, FL; three grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; and many other loving relatives and friends.

The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in his memory to Morningside Baptist Church Family Matters Building Fund, 6065 Morningside Dr., Columbus, GA 31909.
