James Alfred Gorham was husband to Mary Elizabeth Alexander as seen here in the attached family photograph with their adult children. Their children's names were Minnie B., States Wright, Brutus Almet, Wallace Durwood, Dixie Alfonza, Tuella Monta, Zettie Gertrude, Verna May, Walter Rupert, James Monroe and Luther Herman. Many of their children and other Gorham relatives are buried in this same cemetery. This Gorham line extends back to Virginia and before the American Revolution, the Gorham forefathers coming over by ship from England. We believe James to be the son of John M. Gorham who first came to Arkansas from Georgia with a son or cousin named Thomas Gorham. John M. married Harriet Miller giving birth to his first child and son James Alfred, but she later died and the widower married twice more giving James half brothers and sisters. James grew up and then married Mary Elizabeth Alexander of Mississippi in 1869.

They lived in Redland township, Hempstead County, Arkansas where James Gorham was a Justice of the Peace and before that a teacher and school director. They were of the Christian Methodist faith. John was head of a large family having many sons and daughters. If you have any photos or additional details about him and his family, please let us know or email me [email protected].

We are grateful to Debra who first created this memorial. She took the headstone photo and many others for most of the Gorham relatives buried here in Friendship Cemetery
