Mary Elizabeth (Alexander) Gorham was the wife of James Alfred Gorham as seen in the attached photo with their adult children. Their children's names were Minnie B., States Wright, Brutus Almet, Wallace Durwood, Dixie Alfonza, Tuella Monta, Zettie Gertrude, Verna May, Walter Rupert, James Monroe and Luther Herman. Many of their children and other Gorham relatives are buried in this same cemetery. We believe Mary is the daughter of Josiah Alexander and his wife Emma Wooten (Chandler). Her siblings would have been Meredith, Henry, Martha, Sarah, James, Frances and possibly Joseate. Mary was probably born in MS and married James A. Gorham in 1869.

They lived in Redland township, Hempstead County, Arkansas where her husband was a Justice of the Peace and before that a teacher and school director. They were of the Christian Methodist faith. Mary raised a large family instilling good values in each of them. If you have any photos or additional details about Mary or her family, please let us know or email me [email protected].

We are grateful to Debra who first created this memorial. She took the headstone photo and many others for most of the Gorham relatives buried here in Friendship Cemetery.
