Jacob Ulrich was born in Pennsylvania on land that is now part of the city of Roaring Spring. Jacob and his father, Daniel, left Pennsylvania for Indiana and were instrumental in the founding of Hagarstown in 1832.

In 1857, Jacob moved to Kansas and acquired the farm where Ulrich Cemetery now rests. Jacob was recovering from an illness when William Quantrill burned Lawrence and escaped, riding south. Quantrill and his men burned Ulrich's house and other farm buildings. Jacob soon died a few months later.
