Ellen Elizabeth O'Neale was the daughter of John O'Neal. She married James Madison Cutts in 1833. Ellen was known as "My Pet" to Dolley Madison. Dolley also called Ellen and James's son, (James Madison Cutts, II) "Little Madison" and was seen with him at many functions of state and receptions around Washington DC.)

Mrs. Ellen O’Neal Cutts died last evening a little before 5 o’clock at her home in this city. Her death will be mourned by many as a personal loss.

She was of a distinguished Catholic family of Maryland, dating from the time of Archbishop Carroll. Rev. Father Mathew, the first pastor of St. Patrick’s Church, who was her cousin. By her marriage in 1832 to J. Madison Cutts, son of Richard Cutts of Massachusetts and Maine, who represented in six Congresses the present district of Speaker Reed, and who married Anna Payne, sister of Mrs. Madison and Lucy Washington, she became connected with other distinguished families of the north and south.

Her death, in her eighty-seventh year, breaks one of the connecting links in uniting the early days of this city with those of the magnificent capital today.

She leaves as living descendants her only children, Colonel J. Madison Cutts and Mrs. Adele Williams, wife of Gen. Robert Williams, whose first husband was Senator Douglas of Illinois. There are nine grandsons and five granddaughters.
