Betty Joyce Hundley Holtkamp, 88, died peacefully on Thursday, March 1, 2012, in the presence of her loving children, following an extended illness.

She was born on March 22, 1923, in Lake Charles, Louisiana, to Edward Louis Hundley, Sr. and Martina Van Dyke.

She graduated from DeQuincy High School in DeQuincy, Louisiana, in 1941 and later enrolled in the Nursing Program at the Hotel Dieu Hospital, a familiar Beaumont landmark. In 1945, she traveled cross-country to San Bernardino, California, to marry her beloved Bill, a young Marine stationed at Camp Pendleton. The young couple later returned to Beaumont to start their family, before moving to Albuquerque, NM, where Bill attended the University of New Mexico. Texans at heart, they returned to College Station, where Bill received a Master's of Science degree in Electrical Engineering. Bill and Betty raised their family in Beaumont until 1969, when they moved to Richardson, where Betty enjoyed working part-time at the elementary school cafeteria and pursued her love of painting, sewing arts, and stained glass work. Not a holiday or birthday went by that she didn't shower her children, grandchildren, and friends with beautiful handmade gifts.

Bill and Betty loved traveling and explored every state in the U.S. during their years together, even traveling to Canada and the Caribbean. In the sunset of their lives, they returned to Beaumont ... to their roots.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents and beloved husband, William Edward Holtkamp, Jr., a brother, Edward Louis Hundley, Jr., two sisters- in-law, Charlotte Aleene Holtkamp Jones and Karyl Irene Roberts Holtkamp, and son-in-law Charles R. Ray Windsor.

She is survived by two sons, William Edward (Linda) Holtkamp, III of Austin and David Bruce (Irma) Holtkamp of Los Alamos, NM and her devoted daughter, Kathryn Ann Holtkamp Windsor of Fannett; her brother, Charles John Nicky Hundley of DeQuincy, LA; brother-in-law, C.J. (Marion) Holtkamp of Salt Lake City, and sister-in- law, Jeanne Elizabeth Liz Holtkamp of Abilene. Also left to cherish her memory are her grandchildren: William Edward (Jennifer) Holtkamp, IV of Taylor, Christopher Ray Holtkamp of Austin, David Michael (Michele) Holtkamp of Albuquerque, Kathryn Alicia Holtkamp of New York City, and Crista (Neal) Windsor DuBois; nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Grandma Betty will always be remembered for her loving and gentle ways, her soft voice and genuine smile. She always found time to marvel at the simple yet wondrous things in nature, be it a beautiful sunrise, a field of wildflowers, a singing bird, or the soft sounds of evening on the lake. Her joie de vivre and love of family was apparent to all who met her and took a little time to get to know her. Her family will always cherish the many special memories of times shared with her and take great comfort in knowing that she is now at peace and reunited with her beloved, Bill, and with the Lord.

Private graveside services were held on Saturday at Magnolia Cemetery. A memorial service for family and friends will be held on March 17, at 2:00 p.m., at the IL Chapel at Calder Woods, 7080 Calder Avenue, Beaumont, TX.
