Mary Virginia Duck, member of a pioneer Hunt County family who has been instrumental in preserving the history of Greenville and surrounding areas, died at her home Tuesday morning. She was 88.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Coker-Mathews Chapel and burial will be in East Mount Cemetery. Rev. Ben Shinn will officiate.

Most recently Mrs. Duck had spearheaded a drive to compile a history of the homes on Park Street where she and her late husband, Howard, had lived for many years. She also made contributions to various historical preservation projects including a pictoral (sic) history of Greenville.

She was a member of the Hunt County Historical Society and the Park Street Historical Society and member of the Gen. Edward Bulkley Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution which was co-founded and named for her great-great-great-great-grandfather.

She was also a charter member of the American Cotton Museum and Friends of the Library, and held membership in the Scofield Bible Club, the Zodiac Club, Eclecta Club and City Federation of Women’s Clubs.

A retired physical education teacher for the Greenville public schools, Mr. Duck held bachelors and masters degrees from Texas Women’s University and was a member of the Retired Teachers Association.

She was born on Jan. 30, 1908, in Greenville to Walter T. and Bessie Bethel Williams. She and Howard Duck were married on Jan. 1, 1931 and he preceded her in death in 1989. Mrs. Duck was a member of Kavanaugh United Methodist Church.

Surviving are two son (sic), Bill Duck and Howard Duck of Greenville; several grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by a son, a sister and two brothers.

Pallbearers will be Bobby Wolfe, Dick Brown, Bill Cook, Wayne Werner, Charles Mize and David Duck. Honorary Pallbearers (sic) are A.A. King and Everitt Babb.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
