He is also survived by Marsha Kaye Griffin, Walter and Sharon Crook, Hugh and Kristan Griffin, and several nieces, nephews, and other grandchildren. A native of Ripley, Mississippi, Gordon was predeceased by his parents, Harmon and Hermie Griffin. He was also preceded in death by brothers Harmon Griffin, Jr., Joseph C. Griffin, and Wayne Griffin. Gordon left college during World War II and volunteered in the U. S. Navy where he served as a flight instructor. He resumed his education at Mississippi State College after the war to complete his Bachelor of Science degree. He earned a Master of Theology degree from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary and served as a Navy Chaplain until his retirement in 1969 with 27 years of service.
He continued serving others as a career counselor for the Virginia Department of Rehabilitation. During that time he completed a Master of Education Degree at Old Dominion University. He quietly lived his faith, visiting the sick, comforting the troubled, and loving the unlovable. Gordon was an avid gardener and surrounded his home with the beauty of nature for the serenity and enjoyment of family and friends. He was active in the Men's Garden Club of Tidewater and served as President. Always happy coaxing new life from the earth, he turned his love and talent for gardening into a small personalized landscaping business and also grew luscious blueberries enjoyed by many. In his free time he spent countless happy hours on the tennis court with friends.
He was a kind and gentle man and will be missed beyond measure by his family and all who knew him.
