Jacob was born in Jalajarvi, Vaasan Lanni, Finland. He immigrated in 1906 to Canada. It was there that he changed his surname from "Makela" to Mackie. While in Canada he worked at the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel where he met Minna Sophia Ahola who had also recently immigrated from Finland. They were married in 1913 and raised a family of 4 children who lived to adulthood. Two children died in infancy.

Most of his adult life Jacob worked for the Homestake Gold Mine in the Black Hills at Lead South Dakota.
